Conservatory Materials

Your choice of material could be open to a few deciding factors, for example, your house could already have UPVC windows and therefore a UPVC conservatory would be in keeping with the rest of the house, or you may be after the traditional wooden look and feel, or if strength is an issue then aluminium may be your choice.

We've highlighted some of the advantages of each material below to try make your choice a little easier.

UPVC Conservatories

UPVC is the easily the most popular choice of material for conservatories today. It has some obvious advantages which make it such a popular choice, including the fact that it's a low maintenance product requiring very little work inside or out, and it's a good insulator.

UPVC Edwardian Conservatory

Most UPVC systems are internally reinforced with aluminium or steel making them even stronger, and the problem of colour fading or frame discolouration is relatively unheard of with many UPVC suppliers guaranteeing against it.

White UPVC has been the more common choice of colour, although woodgrain is also available if you want a more traditional look.

Hardwood Conservatories

The term "hardwood" defines a range of timbers and has little to do with the density of the wood. Hardwood refers to wood obtained from deciduous trees, which covers trees as diverse as Balsa wood to English Oak!

Hardwood Lean To Conservatory

Durability problems with wood are a thing of the past from the post war years when shortages led to unpreserved sapwood being used. Although now timber structures which have been properly treated can last a lifetime.

Definitely a more traditional approach is to have a hardwood conservatory which can be painted or stained to any colour you wish.

With today's advancements in treatments / stains the need for repainting or staining is less frequent, so less maintenance is required.

Hardwood may be the preferred choice if you require a unique design, or for example, if you have a listed building. If you have a budget, then you will almost certainly get more conservatory for you money if it's manufactured from UPVC.

A conservatory made from Hardwood maybe the most expensive option, but then you'll be paying for quality, and will be very satisfied with the finished product.

Aluminium Conservatories

This is the least popular choice for conservatories, mainly because it's more expensive than UPVC, and in general it shares the same features. Its advantages are that it is strong and light, keeps its appearance well over time, doesn't corrode and requires little maintenance, although it doesn't insulate quite as well as UPVC.
