Conservatory FAQs

Where is the best place to position the conservatory?

Your conservatory will be largely affected by how much direct sunlight it will get. South facing conservatories have the most sunlight and are therefore considerably warmer. If your conservatory is south facing you will need extra ventilation and should opt for roof vents and extra opening windows - also you will probably need roof blinds or tinted roof glazing. North facing conservatories will receive the least direct sunlight and you will require better window and roof glazing for extra insulation. East facing conservatories will catch the early morning sun, but are similar to North facing conservatories in that they will be cooler. A West facing conservatory get a good amount of sunlight and will catch the evening sun.

Can I use my conservatory all year round?

If you take into consideration the location of your conservatory (e.g. south/north facing) and ventilate or insulate according you will be able to enjoy your conservatory all year round.

Do I need Planning Permission?

Depending on where you live you are allowed to extend your house by 50-70 cubic metres and most conservatories will be within this allowance, however there are some exceptions - read our Guide to Planning Permission for more information.

What about Building Regulations?

In most cases conservatories are exempt from Buildings Regulations and you will not need to get approval, but the conservatory must meet certain criteria to be classed as exempt - read our Guide to Building Regulations for more information.

What maintenance will be required?

The design and manufacture of conservatories is continuously being improved and today's conservatories are very low maintenance, with only infrequent generally cleaning required at the most.

Can my conservatory cover a manhole?

Your conservatory can cover a manhole and it is far easier and cheaper than moving it. You will need to use a sealed cover and be prepared that at some point you may need to access the manhole.
